A Philadelphia teacher named Anna Williams posed for Liberty in 1876. She agreed only if her name stayed secret. A newspaper found her out two years later.
What's on it
Liberty faces left in a cap, with cotton and wheat in her hair. On the back, an eagle spreads its wings, holding an olive branch and arrows.
When it was made
An 1878 law ordered two million silver dollars struck every month. America could not mine silver that fast, so the Mint bought some from overseas.
The New Orleans mint
New Orleans struck coins 1838 to 1861 and 1879 to 1909. Louisiana and then the Confederacy seized it in 1861.
