Is my coin silver?
The short version: 1964 and earlier dimes, quarters, and half dollars are 90% silver. 1965 and later are not. Everything else has its own rule below.
Dimes, quarters, half dollars
1964 and earlier = 90% silver. 1965 and later = clad, no silver (look for a copper stripe on the edge).
Kennedy half dollars specifically
1965-1970 are 40% silver (not clad). 1971 and later are clad.
Silver dollars (Morgan, Peace)
All Morgan (1878-1921) and Peace (1921-1935) dollars are 90% silver.
Eisenhower dollars
Only S-mint proof/uncirculated 1971-1976 issues are 40% silver. Regular circulation Ikes are clad -- no silver.
Jefferson nickels
Only 1942-1945, and only if the mint mark sits above Monticello on the reverse (large mint mark). All other years are copper-nickel, no silver.
