1916-S $5 Indian Head Half Eagle
Did you know
The design is sunk down into the coin instead of raised up. In 1909 a coin dealer warned the President that the sunken lines would collect dirt and spread disease.
What's on it
Front: a Native American man in a feathered war bonnet. Back: a standing eagle. Both are carved below the flat surface, like a footprint.
When it was made
Struck from 1908 to 1916, the years when cars and electric light were spreading fast. Then one last year: 1929, when the Great Depression began.
The San Francisco mint
San Francisco opened in 1854 to turn Gold Rush gold into coins. Its S is the oldest mint mark still in use.
