The same striding Liberty is on coins the Mint makes right now. It was brought back in 1986 for the American Silver Eagle, seventy years after its debut.
What's on it
Liberty strides toward the sunrise with the flag behind her, holding laurel and oak branches. On the back, an eagle on a rocky crag.
When it was made
Chosen in 1916 while World War I raged in Europe. Half dollars kept the design until 1947, so it rode through World War II in people's pockets too.
The San Francisco mint
San Francisco opened in 1854 to turn Gold Rush gold into coins. Its S is the oldest mint mark still in use.
