The first design gave the eagle a broken sword. Newspapers said that looked like defeat instead of peace, so the sword was gone before the coins shipped.
What's on it
Liberty faces left in a crown of pointed rays. On the back, a bald eagle rests on a rock watching the sunrise, with PEACE beneath it.
When it was made
World War I was over. Coin collectors pushed for a coin to mark the peace, and the first ones were struck in the last days of December 1921.
The Philadelphia mint
America's first mint, opened 1792. Its coins carried no letter at all until a P appeared on wartime nickels in 1942.
