Buffalo Nickel

Did you know
The face is not one real person. Fraser blended three Native American men into one portrait, and he could only ever name two of them.
What's on it
A Native American man in profile with braided hair and feathers. The back shows a big American bison standing on a mound of earth.
When it was made
Made from 1913 to 1938. It was in pockets through World War I and the Great Depression, so most Americans then handled one every day.
The Philadelphia mint
America's first mint, opened 1792. Its coins carried no letter at all until a P appeared on wartime nickels in 1942.
