Standing Liberty Quarter

Did you know
The date sat on a high spot and rubbed away in people's pockets. In 1925 the Mint sank the date into a small step so it could survive being spent.
What's on it
Liberty steps into a gateway, lifting a shield with its cover pulled back, an olive branch in her hand. On the back, an eagle in flight.
When it was made
The Treasury said the 1916 design showed the country waking up to its own defense. War was raging in Europe and America was arguing about joining.
The Philadelphia mint
America's first mint, opened 1792. Its coins carried no letter at all until a P appeared on wartime nickels in 1942.
