Eisenhower 40% Silver Dollar (1971-1976 S-mint)
Most Eisenhower dollars (1971–1978) are plain copper-nickel: no silver at all. The 40% silver versions only exist as S-mint proof and uncirculated pieces sold directly by the Mint, 1971–1976.
Melt is the floor: what the metal alone is worth today. A coin's collector value can be higher (date, mint mark, condition). It is rarely lower.
A dealer's buy price sits under both melt and retail on purpose — that spread is the margin that keeps the doors open. Ours is listed openly instead.
What makes one worth more than melt
- If yours doesn't have an S mint mark, it isn't the silver version. Check that first, before anything else.
- 1976 bicentennial-reverse Ikes (dated 1776-1976) follow the same 40% S-mint rule.
